The Psychology of Free

Everyone loves getting something for nothing.  When we are offered a “freebie” it has the potential to create positive energy and happiness - both strong, emotional responses.  It can also create a good vibe about you, your business and your brand.  Strong relationships between businesses and customers are important and giving away a great product adds value and leaves customers feeling positive about your brand.

·        Three out of four people keep a promotional product because it’s useful.

·        88% use logoed products when it supports brands or causes they know & like

·        85.4% would rather receive a promotional product than a promotional email

·        Nine in ten agree promo products at an event makes the experience more memorable

When you are creating giveaways, you should customize the product to your specific industry.  For example, lip balm is perfect for a spa giveaway and a travel mug from your favourite coffee shop will be a hit for sure.  Products that can be used regularly will generate lots of brand awareness.  Freebies don’t have to be expensive items to create a positive association with your brand.

Think about your audience.  Are you selling to consumers or businesses?  Pet owners?  Athletes?  Skilled tradespeople?  Choose a product that will be useful or functional for them.  Your personal experience with your customers is a great source of information and will help you determine which products they will want to keep and use.

Free brings out the instinct of reciprocity.  When you do something nice for your customer, they will do something for you in return.  When your giveaway is interesting and useful, the feelings it creates will work for your brand!
